The 12th edition of The Impact Business Breakfast delved into the theme of “Embracing
innovation-centric leadership development for today’s evolving business landscape”.
Three speakers each provided a unique perspective on the topic.
Mr. Mususa as the Guest Speaker spoke on Innovative Leadership and How It Enhances
Business Performance as an experienced leader for many years
Mr. Leonard started by highlighting the traits of an innovative leader giving credit to a 20214
article by Harvard Business Review. The content is however still relevant to any innovative
leader today.
The following are the traits of an innovative leader
Strategic Vision: Innovative leaders must possess a clear strategic vision, envisioning the
result of their innovations.
Customer Focus: Innovations should address specific problems or add value to society,
not be abstract endeavors. The focus must be on solving real issues and improving lives.
Reciprocal Trust: Creating a collaborative environment where trust is mutual is crucial.
Innovation thrives on collaboration rather than isolation.
Purpose-Driven Innovation: Leaders should innovate with a clear purpose, prioritizing
organizational and customer needs over personal gain.
Effective Communication: Innovative leaders must support upward communication and
inspire others to share ideas, fostering a culture of collaboration and idea exchange.
Mr. Mususa continued by addressing the distinction between linear organizations and
exponential organizations as follows
Linear Organizations: Characterized by hierarchical structures and slow innovation
processes. They often focus on incremental growth, risk aversion, and maintaining the
status quo.
Exponential Organizations: Defined by agility, scalability, and a purpose-driven
approach. They use technology to achieve significant performance improvements.
